Where Does the Idea of Satan and His Demons Come From?
The Devil
The garden of Eden is the first place where we see the devil mentioned. Here he comes in the form of a snake to deceive Eve into eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It is through this act of eating the fruit and giving it to her husband, Adam, that all mankind became sinners. We are all born sinners; you, me, every man, woman and child were born in sin. This sinful nature of man is passed down through the blood of the father to every child.
Satan, by deceiving Eve, managed to corrupt God’s creation, bringing sin, pain, sickness and ultimately death into the world.
Many people ask, “Why didn’t God just stop it?” because, he gave to man a very precious gift, the gift of free choice; the choice that every one of us greatly values, the choice to worship him or not to worship him. God didn’t want little robots or puppets that had to love and serve him. He wanted someone who would love him and serve him because they freely chose to love and serve him.
So, by giving Adam and Eve (and all of mankind) the gift of free choice the Lord couldn’t and wouldn’t just step in and take their free choice from them. Not even when they were about to make a huge mistake and misuse the gift. It had to be Adam’s choice whether or not he would obey God’s commandment.
The Lord was very fair as well; he told Adam and Eve what the consequences of eating the fruit would be.
The Lord gave Adam and Eve all the information needed to make an informed, intelligent decision.
There are many other books on the subject of demonology but for the sake of argument, let’s start with the idea that the Bible is true and inspired by God. We’ll be using it as our main reference tool.
Why didn’t God just stop it?”
In this story from the Bible that we find the Devil doing what he does best. Complete home wrecking! He had Adam and Eve evicted from their home and he brought sin and with that came immediate spiritual death; sickness, pain, suffering, and eventually complete physical death into the world.
Man was created by God as a perfect three-fold being:
BODY: Physical Body The external or visible residence in which a person’s invisible spirit and soul resides. It operates the five senses and provides an outward witness to salvation
Spirit: Inner man The part that knows God and will exist eternally, this houses our communication with God, our conscience & our intuition.
Soul: The Mind 1) the intellect (thoughts an reasoning)
2) the emotions ( temperament, feelings, attitudes and moods),
3) and will (choices, decisions and determination)
When Adam sinned he died a spiritual death that separated him from God
The Devils History The devil wasn’t always such a nasty character. Ezekiel describes him this way: he was one of the most beautiful angels the Lord had created; he had music built into him. Pride and ladder climbing was his downfall.
Read the whole story, including the judgments of God, for yourself in Genesis chapter 3.
Also see Satan before and after his fall…
Ezek 28:13-15 (KJV)
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
Isa 14:12-15(KJV) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart,
I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
Demons:
The fact is that Satan got so ticked off at the Lord that he convinced one third of the angels to join him in his rebellion and there was war in heaven. The one third of the angles who were cast out of heaven with Satan became what we know today as “demons”.
So, Satan was/is just plain ticked off at God. He wanted to be “Head Angel” with all the other angels beneath him and be equal with God, but the Lord didn’t approve his promotion in fact, he got mightily “demoted”!
Notice here the 5 “I Wills” of Satan. They totally destroyed His position in heaven!
Isa 14:12-15(KJV)
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart,I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:
I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;I will be like the most High.
Ezek 28:17(KJV) Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
It’s plain to see then, that the devil and his angels really hate the Lord.
They hate everything he stands for; love, joy, peace, holiness, compassion, and they really hate you and I.
They will try to do anything they can to convince you that God really doesn’t love you.
They know that they are going to hell and they want to take as many people with them as possible.
It’s the only way they can get back at the Lord.
It’s like someone with Aids having multiple partners spreading around his disease before he dies.
Evil isn’t it?
That’s Satan!
That’s his demons!
Not exactly the type of spirits I want coming into my home.
Not exactly the type of spirits I want influencing my children!
Not exactly the type of spirits I want influencing me!
