The Power of The Blood
Did you ever have a real dirty job, something that needed a powerful cleaner and disinfectant, something powerful like ammonia?
Just the very name of it makes us want to crinkle our nose, its offensive in the extreme… but it does the job!
A lot of people find the topic of the Blood of Christ somewhat offensive. In our society, blood is never seen as something positive.
In fact, I personally know of one church group who took all the songs about the blood out of their hymnals! Definitely, a lack of good Biblical teaching and understanding there.
So… what does the blood mean and why is it a source of power?
From the days of Garden of Eden to the Cross of Calvary the blood is a major theme in the Bible.
Lev 17:11(KJV)
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
It is summed up in this scripture…
Heb 9:22 (KJV)
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
It may be clearer in this Bible version
Heb 9:22 (NIV)
In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Col 1:14 (KJV)
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
The Bible is so clear on this point that for our sins to be forgiven there must be blood shed.
So the blood is like a power cleanser and disinfectant in our life.
Why did God choose blood?
Because He said there is life in it.
Some of the thing’s that God chooses – He chooses… just because He is God and He chooses them to confound the wise.
1 Cor 1:27-29(KJV)
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence.
❖ Why did God choose a donkey to speak to a man that was going the wrong way?
❖ Why did God choose a woman’s long hair as a sign of power and submission?
❖ Why did God choose speaking in tongues to show us that His Spirit was indwelling us?
❖ Why did God choose getting dunked, totally soaked in water in His name, as the only way to wash away sins?
Because He is God!
Maybe we don’t understand all these things, but we have to leave room for God to be God or else he isn’t God.
A small child can never understand why they can’t run into the street when a car is coming. Daddy may get very firm about this and even have to spank so the child doesn’t go into the street. The child doesn’t understand – accidents, hospitals, and death but his father does.
The child may only – at this stage of his life – understand that, “If I go onto the street, Daddy doesn’t like it and will spank me and I don’t like spanks”.
In many ways we are so like that child when it comes to spiritual things, we don’t understand why we can or cannot do some things or why we can or can’t go somewhere or what have you. We want to argue a point without having all the knowledge, understanding or wisdom to make a truly informed decision.
This is where humility and trusting the Lord really comes in. When you get to really know the Lord you can completely trust Him with many of the issues that you just don’t understand.
In the Old Testament, God choose the sacrifice of an animal and the shedding of its blood to make as atonement for the soul. Every year a lamb was slain for the sins of the people of Israel. Over and above the many other different sacrifices that had to be made for many types of sin.
Exod 29:14(KJV)
But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his dung, shalt thou
burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.Lev 4:32(KJV)
And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall bring it a female without blemish.
Lev 5:7(KJV)
And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the LORD; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.
This topic literally dominates the Old Testament scriptures and there is not enough room here to do the topic justice, but a few more scriptures may help to cement this idea into your mind and heart.
Heb 10:1-4 (NKJ)
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.
Because the blood of these animals was not able to take away sins, there was a need then for an ultimate sacrifice; a sinless, perfect sacrifice to completely eradicate sin.
That sacrifice was of course Jesus Christ, and he willingly made it.
Matt 26:28(KJV)
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
1 Pet 1:18-19(KJV)
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
This is where the hymns come from that talk about the blood of Christ.
His blood was so powerful that it had the ability to completely wash away (forgive, remit) sin when it is applied to a person’s life.
Heb 10:16-23(KJV)
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
The blood of Jesus then will do many things for you when applied to your life:
1. It completely eradicate past sins
2. It will completely eradicate future sin (as long as your heart continues to be repentant)
3. It gives you a clear conscience towards God – I can’t express enough the tremendous feeling of having shame and guilt removed from your conscience – it’s like someone lifts a 100 lb weight from off of your shoulders or someone coming into your home and saying I’m going to pay off all of your debt load and give you a salary of $1,000,000 every year. Complete and utter forgiveness and freedom.
4. Never again will you or anyone have to offer another animal sacrifice for their sins – to those of us who don’t regularly offer animal sacrifices – this really doesn’t connect with us but to the children of Israel who became Christians in the first century following the ascension of Christ – this was powerful freedom! For the rest of us this means – no penitence – no beating yourself up over mistakes and failures – you’re free to be your real self.
5. You become truly Holy and that gives you entrance into the throne room of God to obtain help for any situation, for anything at any time. The benefits that come with that are endless and totally incredible!
6. Demons are totally repelled by the blood of Jesus, it represents to them complete and utter defeat.
So the next question is…
How to I have the blood applied to my life?
There is only one way to have the blood applied to your life to remit or forgive your sins…look closely at these scriptures:
Matt 26:28(KJV)
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Luke 24:47(KJV)
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
Acts 22:16(KJV)
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
There is a strong, powerful connection here between the remission or forgiveness of sins, and water baptism in the name of Jesus.
Water baptism in Jesus’ name = forgiveness of sins = the blood applied with all the benefits.
This is your fourth real source of power against the Devil and his demons – the Blood of Jesus applied to your life in water Baptism in Jesus Name
